Piano Tuning

Pianos generally need to be tuned every 6 -12 months in order to sound their best (and even more often for heavy use).  In addition, because your piano is made mostly of wooden parts, the humidity of our oceanside area has a significant impact on how quickly your piano will go out of tune.
The longer a piano is allowed to go out of tune, the more work and time it takes to get to the piano back to standard pitch and to remain stable and in-tune longer.  When the pitch of a piano has to be changed substantially due to having not been tuned regularly, a pitch correction, sometimes called a “pitch raise,” is needed.

Pitch Correction

If a pitch correction is needed, I will go through the tuning process of your piano multiple times.  The first tuning (or two) is a method used to get the rough sketches of the pitch on the piano and by the final tuning I will be working on the finer aspects of tuning.  This multi-step process is done in one appointment and will help get your piano back into shape for regular tuning intervals.  Even though I will go through the process multiple times during one visit, you may find the piano needs another tuning in a shorter interval than the yearly tuning needed for maintained pianos.
Whether it has been a couple of months or 20 years since your piano was last tuned,  I am happy to help you get your piano back into shape!  Give me a call to schedule an appointment for tuning and other piano services in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts.

Standard Tuning Piano Service

Your piano tuning appointment includes more than just tuning!  I include the following services in every visit:

  • Tuning

  • Preliminary cleaning:  Clean key tops, wipe case parts (please see additional cleaning option if you would like me to clean the strings and under the keys)

  • Regulation of Pedals - adjustment of your pedal timing

  • Minor Repairs - minor repairs can be made in the home during the tuning process at no additional fee, examples may include sticking keys or squeaky pedals

  • Assessment of Your Piano’s Condition - I will assess your piano’s condition to provide you with information and a no-pressure estimate if you would like to have future work performed.

Additional fee

  • Pitch correction - described above, a process used when the piano is far out of pitch

  • Cleaning - cleaning under the keys, the action, and the piano strings

Half-day Piano Service Package

This is a great service for pianos which need more than a standard tuning but which aren’t quite in need of a fuller service.  During this half-day service I will be doing minor regulation and repairs to the piano action, do a full cleaning, and will tune the piano.  Your piano will play more evenly and consistently after this service.  The Half-day Piano Service Package includes:

  • Tuning

  • Cleaning strings, action, inside the piano, and under the keys

  • Minor repairs

  • Regulation of the pedals

  • Touch up regulation of the action mechanism

  • Assessment of your piano’s condition

Full-day Piano Service Package

Designed to bring your piano back up to its full potential giving the player greater control while playing.  I will be doing all of the items in the half-day service and delve deeper into regulation of the piano action.  This process re-calibrates the parts to each other as they change shape over the course of time.  This service is recommended every 10 years at a minimum.  The Full-Day Service Package includes:

  • Tuning

  • Cleaning strings, action, inside the piano, and under the keys

  • Minor repairs

  • Regulation of the pedals

  • Substantial regulation of the action mechanism

  • Assessment of your piano’s condition

Additional service work is available and those items not covered here will be estimated on a case-by-case basis
